FAQ's

Q: Are you a non-profit?
A: Yes! We are a registered Pennsylvania Nonprofit, and an all volunteer organization. Not one of our members takes any salary for this.

Q: How do you get your seeds for the library?
A: We receive seeds from members who harvest from their gardens, seed stewards who grow for us, community members with leftover seeds, harvests from the wild, purchased seed donations, and donations from seed companies across North America.

Q: Is there a cost to use the seed library?
A: Simply put, NO! There will never be a cost to use the seed library. In face legally, seed libraries must be free in     Pennsylvania.

Q: What kinds of seeds are available?
A: We have flower, fruit, tree, and vegetable, seeds. Since seeds come in as donations, we are not able to keep a running tally of seeds that are in stock at the library. We make quite an effort to keep a well rounded selection available across seed types.

Q: How do I know which seeds grow well in my area?
A: That's a tough question to answer in a simple way. Some things may grow really well during warm seasons, but not as well the next season. We don't often if ever have tropical plant seeds or indoor only seeds, so ,most likely seeds will grow well in our area. This is one of the benefits of a seed library. The seeds are no cost to you so you can experiment, and if things don't grow well, try again next season, all at no cost!

Q: Can I donate seeds or other materials to the library?
A: Absolutely! Donations are the way we fill the library, package the seeds, and keep things running. Your donation is the foundation of everything we do! To donate, please see our resources on our DONATION PAGE

Q: What does “open-pollinated” or “heirloom” mean?
A: Open-pollinated seeds are naturally pollinated by wind, insects, or animals and can be saved to grow similar plants year after year; heirloom seeds are a type of open-pollinated seed that has been passed down for generations, valued for their unique traits, flavor, and history.

Q: How do I save seeds from my garden?
A: We have a page dedicated to this topic to help you out right here! In addition, keep an eye out for educational events, tips on our social media accounts, and our podcast for additional help!

Q: Do you offer workshops or events?
A: We do! We hope to have more and more events now that we are a non profit. The best was to keep informed about this is to join our email list and follow us on social media!

Q: Can kids or schools use the seed library?
A: Absolutely! The seed library is open to all. If you have a special event or would like to work on a program together, we'd be happy to help! Reach out to us via our Contact page.

Q: What happens if I take seeds but can’t return any?
A: You do not have to return seeds to us. We are glad when you do, but there is no requirement to do so. If you would like to get rid of them, you could offer to a neighbor or friend!
